COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Nov. 10, 2008 – Colorado College’s Distinguished Organist Series presents Sophie-Veronique Cauchefer-Choplin in concert at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18, in Shove Memorial Chapel, 1010 N. Nevada Ave. The concert is free and open to the public.
Cauchefer-Choplin, who serves as titular assistant of the Great Organ of St. Sulpice in Paris, is considered by her peers to be one of the best improvisers of her generation. In addition to an "Improvisation on a Given Theme," she will play works by Mendelssohn, Franck, Widor, Rachmaninoff and Bedard.
This is the 31st concert in the Colorado College’s Distinguished Organist Series and will be performed on the historic Shove Memorial Chapel Welte-Tripp pipe organ, which was recognized in 1998 by the Organ Historical Society as being "of exceptional historic merit, worthy of preservation.”
It weighs 40,000 pounds and contains more than 3,000 pipes, ranging in size from a half-inch, sub-ounce wheatstraw to a 16-foot pipe of California sugar pine that weighs more than 300 pounds. Its English Gothic spires are 30 feet tall and its console contains three manuals with 65 draw stops. Electrical connections between keys and pipe stops once ran through more than 200 miles of copper wire.
Colorado College’s Distinguished Organist Series features talented organists’ performances two to three times a year.
